The Christmas Card I Get Every Year

To You,

Here is my family. Aren't we lovely? In fact, here are three views of us doing wonderful things. Aren't the kids cute?

I care about you. At least enough to put your address label on an envelope. And to pay Snapfish/Wingflash/Target/Costco to make you a glossy card. But not enough to put your name in the card. Or to write a note, even if it's a form letter. Or to contact you at all the other 51 weeks out of the year.

By the way, I've noticed that your cards to us are always late and the picture, if you include one, is always small and crookedly cut. Don't you care enough to send the very best, which comes from a store and is not personal? You're just not in the spirit of the season.

Sincerely,

Your Friend's, whom you only hear from once a year

  1. Oooh...
Klunk! Klunk! Slappity, slap, slap! What's that sound?
Aah...addressed, but unsent Christmas card envelopes hitting the sides of the trash can.

J, I'm laughing as I write this, but are you having any second thoughts about this post? I don't see any other feedback.

About the photo cards, while I will look on the back to see if there's a note, I don't mind if there isn't. What I do see is proof that all is still well with whatever family sent the photo card. Of course, this is coming from someone who hasn't sent a card in probably 30 years!

  2. I used to feel the same way... And I used to always write individual, thoughtful notes to each recipient. But then I got annoyed that I never received the notes back. So I joined the majority, and do just what you said: printed labels and no notes.

I find solace in the fact that I see and speak to 90% of my recipients at least 10+ times per year. So what would I write? "Great seeing yesterday. See you tomorrow."?

As my therapist and I are fond of saying, but really means not much at all: "It is what it is."
