A note about Advent Activities: My ambitions were high with the basket and all, which I never put together, but we've been doing some, maybe about half, of the ones I listed anyway, just in a more casual manner. But it's a good idea that I will be tweaking for next year.

And it was almost a disaster and definitely a disappointment.
The dough was too soft to move easily, even on a spatula. We even tried rolling it out on the cookie sheet directly but, because of cookie cutter placement, that never resulted in enough ornaments per kid. We did finally get them all on the sheets to bake but it wasn't the delightful, idyllic, stress-free activity I had envisioned.
At least they're old enough not to taste the dough!
The ornaments ended up oddly puffy and a bit overbaked, but we painted them this morning (skipping the "file with sandpaper" step!) and no one cared. Sis did all miniature ornaments, with a set of small cookie cutters I'd found. Bud did big ones, even for normal-sized cutters--a big teapot, a longhorn, the biggest heart I have, a railroad crossing sign--no real rhyme or reason, certainly not Christmas-themed--just all big (insert joke about size matters to men here). I did a gingerbread house and a mitten, in honor of our gingerbread activities and my favorite book right now, The Mitten Tree (and they noticed immediately that I used the same blue colors on the cover of that book). They're all drying on the kitchen floor now, along with the gifts we painted for all of our family, too.
But despite the positive end result, I'm changing dough recipe for next year.
