6:28 a.m. kids run into the room but not to wish me "happy birthday." Instead, a star sticker had fallen off their ceiling and they were fighting over it. I put them back to bed, laughing.
6:57 a.m. They come in to surprise me with presents and wish me "happy birthday." I got a drum set with cymbals from Bud because he likes it when we play drum corps together. And I got a Playmobil set with a mini hedgehog in it from Sis. "Mom," she asked, "can I play with the hedgehog once before you take it?" Sure. Especially because I still have the two tiny ones I hid from her set last year (you know, so she didn't lose them). Mama gives me a glass carafe--no, I haven't suddenly become an avid oenophile--it has money in it and is my "trip to Rome" piggy bank (or whatever big thing I want to save for, Rome being one of those places I would just love to go back to someday. Along with England). Along with it is a Madeline and the Cats of Rome book to read to the kids, with pictures of some of my favorite places (and all those great Roman cats). She says there is another surprise tonight. And I know this one comes from Fortnum & Mason in London because she showed me the box as a tease.
7:36 a.m. Mama makes pancakes. Sis has hers with apple butter, while the rest of us have maple syrup. They're nice and fluffy and thick, just like I like (and I'm the only one!).
8:00 a.m. We play downstairs with the new toys "for me." No wonder they were so excited for my birthday.
9:15 a.m. We read Snowmen at Night, about what snowmen do after dark, realizing that each page has hidden pictures of dinosaurs, bunnies, Santa, and cats that were (very subtle and) great fun to look for.
9:57 a.m. We head upstairs to watch the new Imagination Movers episode. I begin to live blog my birthday.
10:02 a.m. Miss S calls, with little S, and they sing "Happy Birthday" to me.
10:04 a.m. Aunt Banana calls to wish me a happy birthday
