A Year Later

What a difference a year makes. After the euphoric win of Obama last year, I am depressed about politics this year (though not as depressed and, frankly, scared as I was for the eight years before last). The Republicans won numerous victories across my state, as well as in gubernatorial races elsewhere. Not to mention the disappointing repeal of the right to marry for gays and lesbians in Maine. The only glimmer of light, in what was a disheartening story from upstate NY about the conservative wing of the Republican party (I won't call them the GOP; there's nothing grand about them) driving their own candidate to resign her campaign in favor of an unaffiliated candidate because she was too liberal for them: their conservative candidate lost, and the win went to a Democrat. There you go, Palin: everytime you get involved, a Democrat is going to win. It's my only hope for 2012.

  1. Lady, you aint got nuffink to bitch about. In 1975 I signed up through a referendum, to join the European Common Market, roughly a duty free trading zone. Now what are we about to get...a federal Europe consisting of some 29 countries within which most populations have not had a chance to vote about. The current Labour (socialist) government, before it was elected in 2005, promised in the manifesto that there would be a UK referendum....there was not...because that Bush poodle Blair wanted to become President of Europe and was frightened that the UK would not agree to go into a federal Europe thus no referendum. It now seems as if Blair is not going to be President so everyone lost except mainland Europe. The USA are in for a rough time politically for the next few years but you will come through, Obama was a bit too optimistic when it came to promises and the poorer people over expectant but things will gradually sort themselves out. You are disappointed about the reversions in homosexual marriages but in time that will become more relaxed, just keep plugging away gently, the squeaking wheel gets the oil but if it squeaks too loudly it may get a big splosh and be drowned.
