Yankee Party

We had a Yankee party in our bedroom (the only room with a tv, albeit only a 15") this morning with the kiddos. Bud was so excited to hear that his team had won that he hurriedly donned his Jeter shirt and baseball cap (noting that he had been wearing his lucky baseball pjs to bed). Sis followed suit. And then we watched some of the game, starting with Mary J. Blige's stirring rendition of the national anthem ("that song's too long," Bud noted) and going straight to the second inning (ahh, the glories of DVR) to watch Matsui hit a homerun. We're saving the rest of the highlights for later.

I teased Mama about heading into town tomorrow for the ticker-tape parade down the Canyon of Heroes. Even when I lived in the city in the 90s during that streak of 4 championships, I never braved the craziness of the official city celebration. Instead, I always headed into Times Square right as we won, mainly because I lived half a block off the square, and screamed and danced with all the other crazy fans. And bought the championship t-shirt from the stores as soon as I could (I'm wearing 2000's right now!). We'll be getting shirts for all of us soon.

It's been a long time since I could happily watch the Yankees play. The pain of the 2001 World Series loss, in the shadow of our great grief of September 11, when our devastated city so needed something to celebrate, reverberated for years. Last night's victory doesn't erase that stinging disappointment, but there was something sweet in winning again, especially with two kids and Mama to celebrate with.
