My favorite cartoonist, Alison Bechdel, was profiled in the NYTimes today. She has drawn the "Dykes to Watch Out For" comic strip, featuring big, beautiful, countercultural lesbians for more than 20 years. Mama and I used to walk to the lesbian, feminist bookstore Women and Children First in Chicago and buy her cartoon collections or pick up the free papers with her latest strips.
Mom, I know you didn't get into "The 'L' Word" (thanks for trying, and we will check out Puccini for Beginners) but you can check out some of these cartoons when you come up (though we don't have the recent ones or the new essential collection. Hint. Hint.). They have the humor and humanity you thought was missing from the tv soap opera.
But, um, just as much sex.
