Anyway, we don't do separation well when it involves long distances and long times, though several factors ameliorate the stress of this trip, including the fact that she'll be taking that 24+ hour trip both ways with her brother Goo and meeting her parents (who own a house there) when they arrive and that Gommie will be here with me to the kids' ultimate delight. But with all the plane crashes recently, plus political unrest in Thailand, we're more anxious than if she were, say, traveling to Key West or San Diego, as on previous (and longer) trips.
We have our to-do lists (for the twins' birthday party, my mom's arrival, and Mama's departure) that we're slowing working our way through. Now time just needs to pass. But in a fit of needing comfort and distraction, we're both doing things to try to make us less tense. She just bought a gadget, a scanner to capture the family's pictures in her grandfather's house so they can have a copy stateside. And I bought several books at the bookstore last night (but not as many as I started carrying around, I should say). And only 2 of them were cookbooks, both, oddly, about soup! The other was a history of Britain through its food, which I had gotten from the library but wanted more time to delve into. So, at least I'll have recipes to try and books to read while Mama is gone.
'Cos, of course, there aren't already lots of books and cookbooks in my house already . . .
Well old bean, you have things a little twisted. Britain's history influenced its inhabitants menu, remember we have been conquered by the Romans, Vikings, and Normans then in more recent years our colonial past has come back to haunt us in the form of Indian, Chinese and American food. You have got your ims and ems the wrong way round, no need to woryy, only a pedant like me would notice.
