Glad I've got my mommy gig now, because this
article on the dearth of academic positions (and this means professorships, so not something I was looking at anyway) is depressing. It doesn't point out that the market for humanities Ph.D.s was depressed before the wider downturn. Maybe humanities docs are an advanced economic indicator?
THE KEY TO GETTING EMPLOYMENT IS TO THINK LATERALLY AND NOT TO BE TOO HIGH MINDED. I know of three persons, well, motivated but unemployed; one became a server at a rail station croissant shop, another, very desperate to earn, threw discretion to the winds and became a nude model at an art school, the third, a classicist went to Bloombergs. In time they went up the tree but the prospect of an empty belly concentrates the mind. I know of others broken by unemployment.
