We are looking for suggestions for post-WWII (closer to the end of the 20th century) fiction to read, such as:
- E. Annie Proulx, The Shipping News
- Doris Lessing, The Golden Notebook
- Zadie Smith, On Beauty: A Novel
- Snow Falling on Cedars (I don't know why this one; the title keeps coming to mind)
- Kate Atkinson, Behind the Scenes at the Museum
- Stef Penney, The Tenderness of Wolves
- Susan Sontag, In America
- Geraldine Brooks, March
Ok, that's a quirky list. And it's not all-encompassing, not nearly so. Just something of what we are thinking. Google searches of contemporary lit syllabi and reading group lists aren't exactly generating what we are looking for, though we're not sure what that is. Not light beach reading, but doesn't have to be a Booker Prize or National Book Award winner. Come on, Mom, break out all those old AAUW reading lists! Fiction, though, for now.
No murders of children or child sexual abuse, please.
Try a boook by Dornford Yates, the good man always wins, no sex, hardly any children and not much violence. They are mainly between the wars but in reality they are almost timeless saving the heroes drive Rolls Royce and are monied. There are heroines as well but they are secondary. Thy one at least, they have some connection with the heros of the Greek myths. How on earth do you ever get time to read?
