About Sick Kids

No, not mine. Not yet. But of course, it's the season and several of our little friends are sick (get well soon, you guys!).

Thus, this article in the NYTimes about keeping kids home from school is timely. If I read it correctly, it basically says don't worry about anything in the realm of colds except fever (they weren't talking about diarrhea or vomiting, which are in a whole different group of "sick"). Otherwise, they can go to school with coughs and runny noses (well, that's the doctors' opinion, but my school wouldn't be happy with excessive versions of either of these). Basically, germs are clever and have already spread to the other kids by the time your kid is sick; besides, your kid might not actually be contagious anymore. But, of course, do what your doctor and yourschool and mommy intuition say. Though, it might just mean you can go to playgroup!

And, be sure to blow your nose correctly: one nostril at a time. And take decongestants. Otherwise, you're propelling germs into your sinuses at alarming velocity and force.
