What's Wrong with This Statement?

I've started a biography of George Eliot by Kathryn Hughes, who wrote the book on Mrs Beeton that I've liked so well.

So, having started the thus far fascinating bio, I went looking for more of her novels. I've only read Middlemarch and felt like I needed to read Silar Marner, Adam Bede, Mill on the Floss, Romola, Felix Holt, and/or Daniel Deronda to appreciate fully the allusions and references.

I went to the local bookstore today and searched the literature shelves. Stymied, I asked the owner where the George Eliot novels were.

"I don't think I have any books by him. They don't read him in school."

Oh, dear.
