High-Pressure Sales

She's sold 197 boxes of cookies.

In four days.

With some help, of course, but still. Sis is amazing to see in action, shyly walking up to friends, neighbors, churchgoers with a smile on her face as she reaches up to them with her outstretched order form.

"What have you got there?" they ask. Hooked.

She doesn't even have to answer before they've ordered five boxes for themselves and three more for the troops!

She does remember to tell them that cookies are $4 a box, points out types they might not have bought ("there are also sugar cookies! And two kinds of peanut butter!"), and even handily reminds them about donating cookies to charity. She is very adept at determining whom to approach and keeping track of whom she's missed. She dragged Mama around church on Sunday, verbally ticking off all the people who might like cookies and then following them around fellowship until they noticed her. Here at home, she remembers that two houses weren't occupied on our first pass through and she's ready to go back. And tonight she (wisely) hit up Pop, having already gotten Gommie's order, which he more than doubled!

One of our church friends who is active in cookie sales in her area said that Daisies and Brownies always rake in the sales because they are too adorably irresistible. It even works when she's not present, as evidenced by Mama's mere mention at her office that her kindergartener is selling cookies, which netted more than 100 boxes (I think half of which are for the troops, as the Girl Scouts now have this "Gift of Caring" donation if you don't want the cookies yourself).

It's been fun to watch, both Sis's successful scheming sales tactic (all that going up to talk to people is not her usual M.O.) and Mama's incredulity at it all, this being her first cookie sale. And fun to remember my own cookie sales, door to door, 75 cents a box in the beginning!, before there were Samoas (I remember when they started; Tagalongs too), me and my next-door neighbor, both in uniform, dividing up the area early on a Saturday morning, with the goal to sell 50 boxes to earn the patch. My best year, I sold 75 boxes got a tiny stuffed koala bear.

At 197 boxes and counting, Sis will probably earn a stuffed kangaroo. Not much has changed in 30-odd years.

  1. I am so impressed with her drive and organizational skills! What an outstanding achievement!

You can count on me for some boxes for the troops. Please email me how the check should be made and any other details I should know. When is the deadline?
