Adventures in Cooking Our CSA Share: Dirt on the Cutting Board
We are making vegetable soup today, inspired by all the produce in our CSA box: garlic, onions, carrots, green beans, zucchini, yellow squash, corn. But no tomatoes! We had one in the box but Sis said it couldn't go into the soup. Fine with me. So, we spent part of the morning cleaning, shucking, snapping, cutting, and otherwise prepping all the vegetables. And there was dirt everywhere, especially from the garlic bulbs, which seem to be dirt magnets. The onion, too. Funny, supermarket produce never really has dirt on it. It was odd to see so much dirt, even though that's the way it's supposed to be. And even though we washed everything, the little bits of dirt seemed to get everywhere, including all over my new cutting board--I had to wipe it down more than once. But, I figure it's good clean dirt, better than the veggies at the store, which have no signs of actually being grown in the ground.

I had my second home grown tomato this afternoon at lunch time, tasted all right too, there are others to follow but they need some attention, like watering and plucking/picking. What the heck? Home grown, no carbon footprint, perhaps!
ReplyDeleteDirt on your veggies, we have been eating it for millenia, how many people do you know ever got worms? Now cats and dogs, that is another thing.
Be careful how you wash the dirt down the sink, it can form mud and clog up, best if you can to collect and put on the garden where it belongs.
