A Pretty Mess

A sheath of ice more than 1/4" thick shrouds are yard and trees. With temperatures rising above freezing, it sounds like it's raining, as a month's worth of snow begins to unfreeze, or like glass shattering, as sections of hard ice fall off wires and branches and smash on the solid snowpack below. While it had been quiet and still this morning, the street is now alive with activity: people scraping cars, shoveling walks, knocking off icicles, and, most interestingly, a municipal truck cutting down a tree that has sunk too low into the street under the weight of the ice. Mama has worked, both inside and out, doing our share of ice removal. The kids even helped for a bit, pushing ice off the vinyl roof of their playhouse from the inside, creating an avalanche of ice. We're inside now, for warmth, lunch, and rest.
