Tasty Talk

My current hospice patient continues to be such a delightful gift.  We had a wonderful chat on Wednesday, mostly about food.  She loved to cook, though she doesn't anymore, and has compiled books of recipes in her own handwriting, so we flipped through them talking about different meals, traditions, and holidays.  And she kept mentioning cabbage soup, which both she and her mother made, but we couldn't find it in her books.  So she recreated it for me:

Cabbage Soup
Take a head of cabbage, halve it, and boil it.  Then let it cool and slice it thinly.  Add a jar of sauerkraut, rinsed because it's always too strong, to the cabbage as well as mushrooms (1/2-1 lb, sliced), chopped onion, diced potatoes, garlic, water to cover, salt and pepper (more pepper than salt.)  Sometimes tomato sauce, in the end, but also good plain; stopped using bacon--delicious but too much fat.  [She kept saying it was missing something.]  Maybe yellow split peas (1/2 cup) or barley.  Cook til tender.  Serve with rye bread.

It sounds good and I promised her we'd try it soon.
