Since critical thinking is a buzzword these days:

With the first week of school looking like Swiss cheese with days off here and there, I was trying to get a hold on the kids' specials schedule.  Sis said, "I think I'll have Spanish on Monday and Thursday because the teacher said we have Spanish twice but not at all this week."  Clever.

Critical thinking, part 2:

Yesterday, I was explaining to the kids that I'll have to wear Breathe Right strips and later a special nose piece to bed because my very narrow nasal passages are creating a vacuum in my eustachian tubes (got that? it's not actually fluid, but pressure) and I said it was odd that my nose could cause trouble in my ears.  "Of course, Mom," Sis said, "remember that they are connected."

Last bit of parenting vanity.  Yesterday Bud wrote a note to his 1st/2nd grades teacher and he began it with a dependent clause, the subject of which agreed with the subject of the main clause!!!!  That's what reading Harry Potter and those long Rowling sentences does for you.
