(Not Quite) Live Blogging the 4th of July, Part 5

5:22 p.m. Having let them sleep about an hour, we unpause "The Capitol Fourth" (which we realized was last year's) right at the fireworks and wake the children up gently. We listen to the requisite "1812 Overture" and Sousa music, watching fireworks explode over the nation's capitol. Then we head downstairs for s'mores.

5:49 p.m. With graham crackers, chocolate, and marshmallows, plus a bag of briquettes and matches, and one unbent metal coat hanger, we go outside where Mama has assembled the new fire pit in the driveway. I also have the sparklers, but when I go to show the kids, they freak out, terrified that I'm going to blow us all up, confusing sparklers with the fireworks we'd seen on tv. They actually wept and pulled at my skirt and begged. So of course I put the frightening things away. Til later. We focused on roasting marshmallows, which was very successful, highly exciting, and quite tasty. Everyone had one, though I never managed to really char one like I liked (it was very windy and the flame died down quickly, though it had been pretty strong, too strong for marshmallows, at first). We also drank Mama's Strawberry Lemonade (to taste: lemon juice, water, macerated strawberries, sugar), which was tasty.

6:31 p.m. After eating all we could (and doing one sparkler, which was more than enough but didn't really cause more tears--they weren't impressed or interested), and talking to some passing neighbors, the kids managed to squeeze in several last games before dinner: swinging, basketball, hide and go seek, "shark" (where I pretend to be scary and catch them), and fairy-house building.

7:16 p.m. We go inside for dinner, some noodles and leftovers. Then the kids, well-napped at this point past their usual bedtime, actually head to play for awhile, dinosaurs and Diego.

8:04 p.m. Finally, we're up to have a spray in the tub and go to bed.

8:26 p.m. The Fourth of July, for all intents and purposes, is over. The kids have been tucked in, Mama and I are off to clean up all the holiday detritus, and then maybe we too will watch some music and fireworks and fall fast asleep.

Happy 4th of July, everyone! Thanks for sharing it with us.
