This Morning

In the dark,
In the chill,
Shuffling downstairs
To the kitchen,
Where I fill thermoses,
Wash a nectarine,
Bag crackers,
Write a note,
Alone, unhurried, concentrating
On the bags, on the food,
On the kids,
For whom I pack lunch and love.
