I'm having a bit of smartphone withdrawl.
No, I didn't lose my Android.
I gave it away. Or, well, loaned it.
See, Bud is at overnight computer camp for a week and one of his courses is virtual reality--and we didn't know he needed a phone. So yesterday morning, I sent my phone with Sis to give to Bud. Yes, it's slightly risky because he could lose it or do who knows what with it. But I trust him.
The bigger challenge is I don't have a phone. This means no camera, no control of the house sound system, no control of the house AC, no texts, no GPS for driving, and not as much general surfing on FB etc . . . and no access to my dragons in the Dragonvale game! Bud can take care of my dragons and I've got Mama's iPad for some of the other things.
And I lived my first 40 years without a smartphone. But, it does feel odd after several years of smartphone dependency. Still, it's a really good test to see just how addicted I am. Well, I know how addicted I am.
And I'll get it back Friday evening!

A New Toy
Yep, the family has a new toy.
Actually, I have two new toys.
All of us are playing Pokemon, the app that's taken the world by storm. I should specify that I'm not really playing--Sis is playing on my phone. It certainly makes riding in the car more fun--she plays in the backseat while I drive. But we've also walked around the neighborhood and the town green a few times, with dozens of other people, staring into their phones, not talking to anyone. It looks like a scene out of Doctor Who, when everyone stops to listen to their ear pieces; it's kind of creepy. Mama has played with Bud and Sis, too.
The other new toy I have is the DragonVale app. Mama and the kids have been playing for a long time, years even, for Mama. But I'm not much for games. The only other ones I've even tried are Mario Kart and Splattoon. But Bud was so excited to show me how it all worked that I downloaded it on my phone and have been dabbling ever since. I'm not really into advantageous breeding of dragons or the like, but I do like decorating the little island--I have a rose garden, flower beds, a thatched cottage, and a half-timbered building. And the dragons are cute when they're small.
I guess I've finally entered the 21st century.

Phone Curse
As you know, I lost my phone last November.
I think I forgot to tell you that I found it.
About a week after Mama bought a new one and gave me her old one, six weeks after I lost mine, I found the lost one. Remember that I had the horrible stomach flu over Christmas? Well, one of those days in bed, I dropped my "new" phone (Mama's old) by the side of the bed and reached for it, pulling it up. But it wouldn't turn on. It was then I realized it was my old phone in my purple case--it wouldn't come on because it hadn't been charged for a month and a half!!! Of course, I was thrilled because it meant I had all my old pictures. I don't know how we missed it, right there beside the bed and nightstand where we'd looked. We even changed the bed several times. But I think it was camouflaged in the corner of the bedframe, blending in with the bit at the corner, which we didn't notice in the shady light. I think I forgot to mention it because I was sick.
But I kept using my "new" phone since it was all set up. Until last week, when it fell out of my sweater pocket onto the tile floor and shattered the screen. It still worked but the screen was flaking. So, Mama switched out the card with my "old" one, which I used.
Until an hour ago, when I dropped it getting out of the car in the rain at a hospice meeting. The screen shattered like the other phone, but it wouldn't even turn on.
All of which means I guess I'm getting a new "new" phone.
Maybe I shouldn't be trusted with one.
Though, in my defense, I'd say that in twelve years of phone ownership, these are the first two phones I've broken, but two in a week is as lot.
Bother.

Full-Moon Soup
A month or so ago we just happened to have soup on the night of a very visible full moon. Bud suggested we always have soup for full moons because, well, bowls are round.
We did it again this week, having beef noodle soup before going outside to marvel at the rising moon. We also saw Venus glowing bright, a few satellites in their orbits, the belt of Orion, and other stars. The kids' favorite part? Using the Google SkyMap app on Mama's smartphone to identify the different celestial bodies, including pointing it to the ground and "seeing" Mars on the other side of the Earth!
Their excitement reminded me of how infrequently they are outside at night. We'll have to spend more weekend and summer evenings outside.
And eat soup on March 8.

Full-Moon Beef Noodle Soup
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 onion, chopped
2-3 stalks celery, chopped
2-3 carrots, chopped
2-3 garlic cloves, minced
leftover beef roast or other cut, cubed
6 cups leftover drippings, plus stock to supplement
3/4 cup frozen corn
1/3-1/2 lb. rotini pasta
Saute onion, celery and carrot in olive oil in a pot until soft, adding garlic at the end. Add beef and drippings/stock. Simmer, adding pasta and increasing temperature about 15 minutes before you are ready to eat. Add corn and flavor to taste.
