A Funny Thing Happened . . .

 . . . at the doctor's office today (no worries, just my annual gyn.)

I was a new patient and therefore being asked all these questions.

Level of education?  Ph.D.

Working or homemaker?  Homemaker

I whispered to Mama that I should just call myself "Dr. Homemaker!"  Really, I can't believe that term is still in use officially.

(At least I'm no longer a "spinster" because I'm legally married in CT.)

Besides, I think of myself as more of a professional volunteer, between Girl Scouts, the historical house, and now hospice.

Think "professional volunteer" is a category on LinkedIn?!

Ph.D.--What, Me Worry?

Check out my friend American Modern discussing a recent article on the current state of and possible solutions for graduate education in this country.

And then read the NYTimes on adjuncting, the only kind of job Ph.D.s seem to get anymore. And now there will be more competition for those . . . but even the article can't seem to make it very attractive: "the pay for adjunct professors is usually low, and the work can be challenging."

And now tenure--not that any Ph.D.s I know are even on that track (excepting my MIL, who is a Ph.D.-holding tenured professor, but that happened well before my time)--is up for discussion as well! Which is probably a good thing . . .
